Superintendent of Education Joe H. Welch of the Simpson County School District recognized for work with the America Reads Mississippi – AmeriCorps program.
Joe H. Welch, Superintendent of Education for the Simpson County School District, was recently recognized as Superintendent of the Year for his work and support of the AmeriCorps Program through the America Reads Mississippi Project.
AmeriCorps volunteers work in the schools and in after -hour programs to provide reading and literacy experiences to students.
The Simpson County School District has been a leader in Mississippi in recruiting and training volunteers for this program in conjunction with the University of Southern Mississippi.
AmeriCorps volunteers work at Magee Elementary School, Mendenhall Elementary School, and Simpson Central School. They have participated in the READ TO ME Campaign, Destination Graduation, and many other projects in the District.
Volunteers must complete 1,500 hours per year and they do receive a work stipend, child care if needed, and a stipend for reimbursement of education costs for coursework.
The Simpson County School District currently has over 20 AmeriCorps volunteers working in the schools.
