William E. (“Bill”) Bennett Magee
William Earl Bennett, 81, died July 17, 2010, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. Services are at 2 p.m. Monday, July 19 at Meadow Grove Baptist Church in Brandon. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-9 p.m. at Baldwin Lee Funeral Home in Pearl and Monday at 1 p.m. at Meadow Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in Lakewood Memorial Park.
On May 29, 1929, William Earl Bennett was born to William J. and Leatha Smith Bennett. He spent his childhood in Jackson and graduated from Central High School in 1949. He joined the U. S. Air Force in 1950. While stationed at Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts, he met his future bride, Jean Cleary. After returning from duty in Frankfort, Germany, Staff Sergeant Bennett returned to the states. He and Jean began their 53 years of marriage on June 5, 1954.
William joined the Jackson Police Department in 1954. During his 30 year career with JPD, he served the city of Jackson in many capacities. He graduated from the F.B.I. National Academy in 1974. Captain Bennett retired from JPD in 1984 as Commander of the Detention Unit.
Throughout his life, Mr. Bennett exhibited a love for his family and for his Savior Jesus Christ. He was a member of Meadow Grove Baptist Church. He was a Shriner and a member of the Brandon Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, watching basketball, and being with his family. He greatly enjoyed his view of the lake from his new home in Magee.
Mr. Bennett is survived by his son, Dr. William A. Bennett and wife Linda of Magee; granddaughter Faith Bennett Kennedy and husband Brian of Magee; great-grandchildren Dylan, Mason, Benjamin, and John Caden Kennedy; as well as a large extended family. He is preceded in death by his wife Jean Cleary Bennett.
