Take a drive out Highway 541 these days, and you might just get a glimpse of a very unique plant at the home of Mrs. Floyd Hammond. The Century Plant in her yard bloomed this year, showcasing a stalk nearly 20 feet high topped with the plant's fan-like flowers. The Century Plant, despite its name, generally blooms after growing for about ten years, but the length of time for each plant varies depending on its environment. Its scientific name is Agave Americana, and after flowering, the plant dies so if you want to see this one, hurry out to Hwy 541 about 2 miles past the store in Martinville. It is located on the right before you get to Hayman Lake Road.
