MRS. SARAH JOE HARRIS RAYFIELD, of Aiken, SC, 72, died Wednesday, September 12, 2012 following a brief illness.

Born August 4, 1940 in Raleigh, Mississippi, Sarah was the daughter of the late Dewey Joe and Mabel Headrick Harris.

During elementary and high school years she attended a dozen schools from the Gulf Coast to Ohio. She graduated from Demopolis, Alabama High School in 1958 and moved to Florida the same year. She went to work for the Brevard County School Board, and then the Brevard County Sheriff's Department. She also worked for the Bendex Corporation at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, as a system test recorder. At this time she also came to know the seven original astronauts, and even went inside an actual spacecraft during this time. Later on she was employed by First Federal Savings and Loan in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, then later with the Bechtel Power Corporation at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Power Plant in Port Gibson, Mississippi.

Survivors include her beloved husband Lee Rayfield, her daughter, Junell Brock, Son, David Rayfield, daughter, Amy Black, grandson, Joseph Chaney, granddaughters, Elizabeth and Leighann Rayfield, and grandson, Nicholas Farr.

She is also survived by two sisters, Peggy Geldmeier of Oak Ridge, Tennessee and June Eisemann of Wilmore, Kentucky, as well as a sister-in-law, Paula Harris of Covington, Louisiana.

Sarah loved her family deeply. She had a great love and concern for her country. But most of all, she loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. You could not talk very long with Sarah without Jesus becoming the center of the conversation. Her family rejoices that she is now free of chronic pain and "safely home". She will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September, 21, 2012 at 4:30 PM at Double Church in Raleigh, Mississippi. The family will receive friends from 3 to 4:30 at the church prior to the service. Interment will follow in Double Church Cemetery.
